The famous statue of Liberty supporting the placard below the statue of San Martin in the plaza. Famous because of the error made the sculptor, who was told in his commission to sculpt her with a flame atop her helmet. Unfortunately, as all the guidebooks will tell you, and Carlos repeated, "flame" in Spanish is "llama," and the confused sculptor, knowing his work was intended to mark Peruvian history, thought they actually wanted an animal. Thus Liberty ended up with a crouching Andean camelid on her head.
