Lima, Peru

The gallery projecting into the street is one of the few remaining in its original form from the colonial period. Limo Centro was once filled with these second floor galleries, with their traditional Moorish screens that were intended a woman to converse with people on the street without being seen, while she could see them. Many of them were converted to pane glass windows over the years, if they weren't removed entirely from the structure. There was also a colonial revival movement in the 19th century where replicas of these galleries were placed on new buildings that hearkened back to the originals.
